Organized by the Pinacoteca de São Paulo on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of two landmark exhibitions in Brazilian art—Opinião 65 and Propostas 65—Pop Brazil is the most important and extensive exhibition presented in our country on the innovative and radical art produced by Brazilian artists during those two decades.

As seminal exhibition experiences for the development of the so-called Brazilian New Figuration, Opinião 65 and Propostas 65 served as catalysts for collective strategies capable of addressing Brazil’s political and social context, marked by the expansion of mass culture, resistance to the military dictatorship (1964–1985), and the emergence of cultural movements such as Tropicália and Cinema Novo.

Pop Brazil highlights the radical ways in which Brazilian artists engaged with the everyday realities of their country, creating works that reconfigured the experience of the body in relation to forms of protest, popular culture, gender politics, public space, domestic life, and consumer culture. In this sense, the exhibition also examines the connections forged during the 1960s and 1970s between the visual arts and other artistic fields such as music and film. Pop Brasil invites audiences to experience the radical nature of these practices and to understand the historical relationships among them.
